From our experience working daily in partnership with local churches to provide emergency relief in Scott County, we are anticipating a new wave of requests. We believe these requests will overwhelm an already exhausted support system. Bills have now been sent (rent/mortgage, utilities, food), but family assets have not recovered yet. While there have been relief funds from the federal government, our experience tells us that those funds will not be enough to truly bring families back into balance, and many funding sources will not arrive at the needed time.
We have no way of knowing the amount (number of families or dollars) needed beforehand. Our conversations with church leaders, nonprofit leaders, and community leaders indicate the same assumption we have of what is to come. In short, we feel that we have to take a proactive approach, prepare the best we can, and do everything in our power to help those most acutely impacted by this pandemic.
